I work for a large company and our department uses AIM for instant messaging eventhough our company has its own instant messaging system. Our company does not restrict employee use of AIM for work related messaging, but I have always found it odd that everyone is using AIM eventhough our internal IM service provides many of the same features as AIM. I cannot think of one good reason that we should all be using AIM instead of the internal service. I can think of many reasons why, if given the power, I would choose to require employees to use the internal service rather than an external IM.
